Which Australian banks does this work with?

Short answer: all of them, and you don’t have to take our word for it. Five banks have a parser written specifically for their statement layout. Every other bank goes through table detection — we read the statement’s own column headings and work out the layout from the page.

Either way the conversion is checked the same way before you download it: the transactions we extracted have to add up, to the cent, to the closing balance your bank printed. If they don’t, you get a flagged file and a plain-English message instead of numbers that look fine and aren’t.

Why PDFs and not a bank feed

Section 286 of the Corporations Act requires financial records to be kept for seven years after the transactions they cover are complete. Australian banks will give you seven years of statements as PDFs — but Open Banking generally only carries about two. When you need to go back further than a bank feed reaches, which is most of the time in a catch-up or an audit, the PDFs are the record.

Banks with a dedicated parser

Written against these banks’ own statement layouts, including the quirks that trip other converters up.

Every other Australian bank

These go through table detection. We haven’t hand-written a parser for each one, and we don’t need to — the converter finds the transaction table by reading the statement’s column headings, then proves the result against the balances on the page. If your bank isn’t on this list at all, it will very likely still work; the list is not a gate.

What doesn’t work

Scans and photos. If the PDF is a picture of a printed statement there is no text in it to read, and we don’t do OCR yet — you’ll get a clear message saying so rather than a bad conversion. Download the PDF from your bank’s app or internet banking instead of scanning a paper copy and it will work.

We also refuse a statement with no balances anywhere on it — no opening and closing figures and no running balance column. There would be nothing to check the conversion against, and we’d rather say so than hand back numbers we can’t verify.

What if it gets my statement wrong?

You’ll know. A conversion that doesn’t balance is marked as failed, in the file itself, with the row the running balance broke at. A statement that doesn’t print opening and closing balances is marked not verified rather than passed — we check it against the running balance column instead, and we say so, because claiming a reconciliation we couldn’t actually perform would be worse than admitting the limit.

Send us a statement that fails and we’ll fix it — that’s how banks get a dedicated parser.
